Canadian Groundhogs Calling For Early Spring

Good news for those who are ready for an end to winter.

Ontario’s Wiarton Willie, Manitoba Merv, Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam and Quebec’s Fred La Marmotte left their burrows this morning and they all did not see their shadow.

Folklore has it that if a groundhog doesn’t see its shadow on February 2, we are in for an early spring.

Alberta’s Balzac Billy was the only high profile groundhog to see his shadow and is predicting a longer winter.

CKDR Meteorologist Bill Laidlaw says Dryden’s Max the Moose didn’t see his shadow, so the legend has it that spring is just around the corner, which explains why we are going back into the deep freeze for all of next week.

Events were done virtually this year because of the pandemic.
