Cancer Rates Higher in Treaty Three Communities

A new report from Cancer Care Ontario shows that certain types of cancers are more prevalent in Treaty Three communities than the rest of the province.

The report was just released last week and presented to Treaty Three health directors and leaders.

Sehar Jamal is a researcher with Cancer Care Ontario and says the results are concerning. “We found that certain cancer incidence was higher on Treaty Three compared to other people in Ontario. The most common we found was colorectal cancer.”

She adds cervical and kidney cancers were also higher in Treaty Three than the general population.

Jamal says the report has also been distributed to each of the 28 member communities of Treaty Three.
