The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is calling for a guest worker program to allow people from outside the country to work here in jobs that are going unfilled.
This would replace the temporary foreign workers program.
Federation President Dan Kelly says he hears from small business people everyday about how work ethic has evaporated.
Kelly says the revamped program would come with the prospect of permanent residency two years after coming here.
He stresses small businesses are complaining they can’t find workers in spite of high unemployment in some regions.
Kelly says the immigration system doesn’t allow small businesses to hire people from outside the country with entry level skills when the economy needs workers at all skill levels.
