The Dryden Regional Health Centre will be decommissioning its analog diagnostic mammography unit by the end of January.
Chief Executive Officer Wade Petranik says the decision was made following new standards set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario as well as Cancer Care Ontario.
Petranik says evidence shows digital mammography coupled with higher volumes of exams produces better overall quality of care.
He says the hospital will arrange digital testing and follow-up services in Sioux Lookout, Kenora, Fort Frances and Thunder Bay for the 350 women that require mammography services a year.
Petranik adds breast screening will continue to be provided in Dryden through the Ontario Breast Screening mobile van that visits the area on a regular basis.
