The chief coroner of Ontario says he supports the recommendations of his expert panel that studied the deaths of 12 children in care of welfare agencies.
Dirk Huyer believes the panel has done a careful and thoughtful review of the deaths.
Huyer says the report illustrates that high risk youth need a system of care that is integrated and coordinated.
He believes the suggestions are reasonable and practical.
The Ford government has six months to respond to the report’s recommendations.
Meantime, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief will propose that a committee be set up to ensure recommendations of the “scathing report” are put into law.
Alvin Fiddler adds, the “report shows the urgent need for change in the care of at-risk youth.”
The provincial government says it’s ready to act on some of the recommendations contained in the coroners report.
Minister for Children, Community and Social Services, Lisa McLeod, says the buck stops with her, and she promises to take immediate action.
