Simon Fobister and two other residents from Grassy and Whitedog travelled to Minnimata to check out first-hand how mercury poisoning has affected residents there.
Fobister says the parallels between the two areas are striking.
However, Fobister says the Japanese have developed a much better compensation system for victims of mercury poisoning and also have better medical treatment.
