Child Care Centre Looks At Increasing Security

Dryden’s Child Care Centre is making changes following an incident where a child left the facility without being noticed. Manager of Children’s Services Vanessa Shepherd says they are looking into installing a surveillance system.
In addition, Sheperd says they have set up a chime-system that sounds when a door is open or closed. A giant stop sign has also been placed near the door, so children know not to leave the facility.
Sheperd says they have issued a notice to all parents of school age children that attend the day care, and have included a statement from the Day Nurseries Act:

“Supervision of school age children should be carried out in a manner which ensures safety but supports the principles of increased responsibility and independence for children as they mature. For this age group, appropriate supervision may not require that children are, “in the presence” of an adult at all times, thus enabling more flexibility in programming. For example, a school age group might be engaged in a variety of activities in two separate rooms and supervised appropriately by a staff person who can float between rooms
easily or who perhaps is assisted by a volunteer. Operators must use good judgement in matters of supervision, as they are responsible for the safety and well-being of the children. Parents must be made aware of the level of supervision exercised and should acknowledge their agreement in writing. Operators may wish to consult with MCSS program advisors regarding supervision issues for school age children.”

Shepherd says they have held meetings with staff, and been in communication with the mother of the child who escaped the day care.
