Dryden’s City Manager is looking into MPAC’s low assessment of the Domtar Mill and its operations in the city.
Joe van Koeverden says he has been reading over the report submitted by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation.
He says the arbitrator used the value of the mill as a pulp facility only, and there was nothing to do with the other buildings that are being unused.
City council will look to review the assessment with a legal team and the government.
Van Koeverden says the way things are going, it is bad news for any town that has a mill.
He says that the same kind of situation happened in Espanola.
Van Koeverden adds that these low assessments will have an impact on municipal taxes across northwestern Ontario.
