Clean-Up in Sioux Lookout Going Well

Clean-up efforts continue at Pelican Beach in Sioux Lookout.
The Municipality, CN Rail as well as Provincial and Federal officials have been on site since contamination was found last Thursday.
Community Development Coordinator Brian MacKinnon says excavation of the visible contaminated sand and soil has been completed and the product has been removed.
MacKinnon says CN continues to work towards shoreline restoration and he expects the popular swimming and boating area to be ready for this Summer.
Water sampling results indicate that there’s no threat to the local water supply, although sampling will continue for another month as a precautionary measure.
Test wells will be drilled in the coming days to fully understand the origin and scope of the contamination and to ensure it never happens again.
The contamination is believed to be diesel fuel, but it won’t officially be known until next week.
