The converted Thunder Bay Generating Station will be called upon to handle the energy needs of northwestern Ontario, but the province may be limiting its ability.
The government has advised officials that the facility will only be allowed to run for 8-hours a day, 5-days week using 15,000 tonnes of biomass.
A coalition of regional representatives says the plant needs to be running full-time with 75,000 tonnes up front, with more available as the supply is used.
Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs calls the government restrictions “unacceptable.”
Hobbs says if there is no change in the government’s position, the City and the Northwest Energy Task Force will make it an election issue.
He adds the next move is a meeting with Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli at the Ontario Good Roads convention at the end of the month.
