College Staff Turn Down Contract Offer

A no vote from unionized staff at Ontario’s 24 colleges, including Confederation College.

Sixty-two per cent voted against a proposed offer from the College Employer Council.

The 14,000 members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union are working-to-rule, but are in a legal strike position.

The Council says it is disappointed by the outcome.

Chair Dr. Laurie Rancourt says they can’t agree to the union’s demands on the remaining outstanding issues, calling them unacceptable.

OPSEU wants the Council to consider voluntary binding arbitration.

But the Council’s Chief Executive Officer says they’re not prepared to have an arbitrator, “split the difference” on key issues.
