Common Voice Reacts To Regional Energy Plan

The Co-Chair of the Common Voice Northwest Energy Task Force says the provincial announcement to convert the Thunder Bay generating station is “like half a loaf of bread”.
Iain Angus says the government will only operate half of the plant for 5-years using advanced biomass.
Angus says in the short term, the station will remain operating and retain existing staff, however notes the long term still is cloudy.
He notes the province is only keeping 15,000 tonnes of fuel, or enough for 2% of their capacity.
Angus stresses the north still doesn’t have the power it needs and it won’t be enough to operate the mines the north wants in production in 2016.
He stresses the period between 2016 and 2020 is crucial when it comes to an increased level of supply in the region and without the full output of the generating station we won’t be able to support new growth.
Angus says they will continue lobby efforts.
