The Ontario Sunset Country Travel Association is concerned Canada’s new Drinking and Driving laws will have a negative impact on tourism.
Gerry Cariou is Executive Director and says the legislation, that went into effect earlier this week, criminalizes old DUI convictions for American visitors.
Caroiou says “I think it’s kind of ridiculous that we consider someone with misdemeanor DUI the same as someone with a murder conviction…conviction for armed robbery…conviction as sexual assault.”
“They are not the same. Canada is the only country that doesn’t let people in and it’s killing tourism.”
Cariou suggests the federal government regulations on DUI’s is costing tourist outfitters in northwestern Ontario more than $10-million a year in lost revenue.
