A recent study found that in a total of 8,207 deaths analyzed, the majority of the infants, 69%, were bed-sharing at the time of death.
The risks of adults sleeping with their infants included sudden unexpected death, entrapment, suffocation, falling and over-heating.
Public Health Nurse with the Northwestern Health Unit Twyla Berubay says the risks are higher when the caregiver smokes and drinks.
The recommended best sleep practice for infants is to place them on their backs in a crib, bassinet, or cradle.
The crib, bassinet, or cradle should have a firm mattress and meet current Health Canada safety regulations.
