There are a number of calls in Ottawa for the resignation of Conservative Senator Lynn Beyak.
Beyak is under fire for some positive comments made about Canada’s Residential School system during a recent meeting of the government’s Senate Standing Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.
In a statement, Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP and Chair of the Liberal Indigenous Caucus Don Rusnak says that comments like Beyak’s aren’t acceptable.
He says the historical facts on the harm of Residential Schools are clear, and says this shows the need for education and awareness about the impact of the system.
The Indigenous Caucus is also calling for Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose to remove her from the Conservative Caucus.
Rusnak is also joining others asking Beyak to issue a formal apology.
The National Chief of the Assembly of First Nation is also expressing disappointment.
Perry Bellegarde calls it a misinformed attitude.
Bellegarde says it shows there’s a need for more public education and greater understanding of our shared history.
