Cool, Damp Weather Really Helping Fire Crews

There were only three new forest fires in the region over the weekend.

Two in the Fort Frances and Nipigon districts were recorded Sunday and a small one about 36 kilometres north of Ignace Saturday.

There are now 93 active fires in the northwest.

Eleven are not under control, with four being held, 14 under control and 64 being monitored.

The fire hazard is mainly low to moderate across the region.

However, a Restricted Fire Zone remains in place.

The wildfire situation in the Red Lake district is starting to ease.

Red Lake 51 and 65 are now both being observed at 53,522 and 20,254 hectares respectfully.

Both have seen more than 100 millimetres of rain since August 1 and there has been no growth and no concerns.

Red Lake 77 remains not under control at 32,799 hectares but officials say there has been significantly reduced fire behaviour due to recent rain.

Meantime, great progress is being made on Kenora 51 thanks to mother nature.

About 30 to 50 millimetres of rain fell on various parts of the fire overnight on Friday and into Saturday.

An additional 3 to 8 millimetres is expected Monday.

The rainfall, cooler temperatures and high humidity has reduced the fire behaviour and the potential for new starts in the area.

Crews returned to the fire line Sunday after a pause in operations the previous day due to safety concerns posed by high winds.

They continue to consolidate hoselines in priority areas.
