CRA Tax Scam Back In Dryden Area

Dryden Police are warning residents of another wave of Canada Revenue Agency scams hitting the area.

Police have received several complaints over the past couple of weeks, with scam attempts via email and phone.

The phone scam involves someone claiming to be from the CRA stating a recent audit has identified discrepancies with past filed taxes, calling for repayment.

Fraudsters threaten consumers that failure to pay will result in additional fees, jail time or deportation.

They request payment by a money service business or pre-paid cards and gift cards.

The email scam has consumers receiving an alert of a pending tax refund.

It includes a link that directs you to a website that mimics the actual CRA and asks for personal information in order to receive a money transfer.

Potential victims are asked to input their Social Insurance Number, Date of Birth and banking information.

Police say the CRA never asks for personal information through an email or text message or by clicking on a link.

They add the Agency will never request payment by prepaid credit cards or gift cards.
