Canadian Blood Services needs donors right away as there is a critical shortage for all blood types.
Spokesperson Peter MacDonald says they normally run the national blood inventory at more than 20,000 units, which ensures a six to seven day supply of blood products for hospital patients.
However, MacDonald says right now they are running at 12,000 to 14,000 units.
That only provides three days of coverage.
MacDonald says they need new donors and notes they do prefer people book in advance but you are welcome to walk in.
Regional clinics aren’t held anymore, and the closest donor site is in Winnipeg.
He says if everyone that can donate actually did twice a year, they would never have to send out messages about a critical shortage in the blood supply.
