Cyber crime investigation underway in Atikokan

OPP are trying to determine the authors of some social media pages connected to Atikokan.

The pages allegedly promote online harassment and bullying of young people in the community.

Police learned about the pages this year.

OPP say they have taken copies of the derogatory posts and are working on identifying who is responsible.

“If history has taught us anything, it’s that cyberbullying can have serious effects on the well-being of young people,” says an OPP release. “Offences include criminal harassment, defamatory libel, public incitement of hatred, mischief, and harassing communications. Police agencies can work with social media companies to retain data as evidence, then acquire the evidence with proper authorizations for prosecution.”

In Canada, anyone convicted of a cybercrime can face up to ten years in prison.

Anyone with information regarding this crime can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or through its website.
