Decision Made On Electoral Reform

A special all-party committee on electoral reform has decided to go the exact opposite way of the wishes of some local residents.

The committee is recommending that the Trudeau government design a new proportional voting system and hold a national referendum to gauge how much Canadians would support it.

At the only regional Town Hall meeting on the issue held in Dryden last month, all but one person in the crowd of 50 voted against the idea of a referendum.

Kenora MP Bob Nault hasn’t publically expressed his opinion but has said making a positive change to the voting system is a “messy situation”.

The long-awaited report of the electoral reform committee also recommends that the government not proceed at this time with mandatory voting or online voting.
