The Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit has been recognized for his crusade against second hand smoke.
Dr. Pete Sarsfield was presented with an award of merit from the non-smokers rights in Toronto last week.
Sarsfield says he was surprised to receive the award.
The Association says the award is in recognition of Sarsfield’s leadership in public health and his work to persuade municipal politicians about the risks of second hand smoke.
Meantime, the Northwestern Health Unit is seeking financial donations from the public to help make ends meet.
The budget has been strained by the nearly year long battle over workplace smoking.
Dr. Sarsfield says they are now registered as a charitable organization.
Sarsfield says they are seeking public support for its legal expenses and some of the other programs under the Health Unit’s mandate.
