Dryden Council Aware Of Colonization Name Concerns

Recent controversy surrounding the name Colonization Avenue is on the radar of Dryden City Council.

Members say they are aware of a new social media video denouncing the name.

Mayor Greg Wilson says a newly formed volunteer group is expected to look into the issue and possibly make a recommendation to Council.

“We will let the ‘Working Circle’, which was created through the efforts of Councillor Bush earlier this summer, get up and running so that Council has a means of moving forward on the matter of local reconciliation as per the federal governments Truth and Reconciliation mandate.”

Wilson says the ‘Working Circle’ has both Indigenous and non-Indigenous representation.

Wilson and Norm Bush both expect a “positive” report from the group in September.

The name change issue has been punted around the Council table before but has never received serious consideration.
