The City of Dryden says it has hired four professional firefighters on a contract basis after word that many of the Volunteer Fire Department are continuing to ‘suspend service’ to the community.
The city says these firefighters will support the existing fire service which is made up of paid volunteers and the Dryden Fire Service Staff.
Volunteers from Oxdrift and Wabigoon have been assisting the Dryden Fire Service for the past 12 days. Chief Administrative Officer Ernie Remillard says many firefighters from Dryden, Oxdrift and Wabigoon have been going above and beyond and these four professional firefighters will increase their capacity and ease scheduling pressures.
Remillard also says volunteer service is extremely important to our community and that they value their time and commitment.
The move comes after the City was advised March 2 that Fire Fighters had voted to continue ‘suspending service.’
Service was withdrawn after the City allegedly terminated three members of the volunteer force.
