Residential phone rates in Dryden will soon be going up.
Dryden Telephone has asked city council for an increase to compensate for lost revenue from long distance carriers.
The CRTC has ruled that companies like Bell Canada no longer have to pay large subsidies to small independent phone companies to access long distance customers.
Dryden Telephone spokesman Ivan Probizanski says the lost revenue will have to be recovered through an increase of 1.55 per month, bringing monthly rates to 18 dollars.
He adds the new rate compares favourably to other telephone companies including Bell.
The rate will likely take effect in March, pending approval from city council.
