CKDR News had a chance to speak with a local World War 2 Veteran this Remembrance Day.
A service was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, followed by a march to the Cenataph for the laying of the wreaths.
93-year-old Clair Ernewein joined the Canadian Army when he was 20 years old, says he went over to England and became a Sergeant.
He was also responsible for towing gliders and in training command, which is when he finally got onto spitfire and became a flying officer.
From England, Ernewein says they went down to north Africa, then up to Syria through Palestine and completed his duty in Italy until the end of the war.
Ernewein admits that he actually enjoyed the war because he loved the aviation portion of it.
However, like his comrades, he says it’s nice to see that so many people still come to Remembrance Day ceremonies and pay their respects to all those who served in battle.
