Eagles Shut Down Portage For Second Straight Win

A very encouraging start to the Winnipeg High School Football season for the Dryden Eagles.

The ‘Blue and Gold’ won their second straight game to start the year with a 27-6 win over Portage in a physical affair Friday night.

It was a defensive struggle to start until Jarett Hicks finally broke the deadlock with a 55 yard touchdown run.

Before the first quarter ended, Liam Wrolstad powered into the endzone from 14 yards out to extend the lead.

Dryden held Portage off the board until the fourth thanks to a fine defensive effort.

Joel Ottertail and Kadin Taylor, off the ends, provided the pressure, while Thomas Moline recorded his second interception of the young season.

The Eagles got some breathing room in the final quarter thanks to a third and short effort from Hicks, that resulted in a 27-yard major.

The hometown Trojans did answer with an unconverted touchdown, however the Eagles relied on a strong running game and the big boys at the line to secure the victory.

Liam Wrolstad would put the icing on the cake with a two yard score to seal the win.

Dryden looks to ride the momentum into their home opener and Homecoming game next Friday at Harry McMaster Field.

They will face the 0-2 Beaver Brae Broncos.

Kenora fell to Tec Voc on Week #2 14-7.

In other action, Fort Frances dropped a 45-26 decision to St. Norbert.
