Elk Population Stable In Northwestern Ontario

The elk population remains fairly stable in northwestern Ontario despite a harsh winter.
Murray English is the co-chair of the Lake of the Woods Elk Restoration Committee and says they have between 40 and 50 animals in the Cameron Lake area southeast of Kenora.
English says the elk are pretty well adapted to winter conditions and doesn’t think the deep snow and cold will have much impact on their numbers this year.
Elk were released into the Cameron Lake area about 15 years ago.
