Domtar is reporting net earnings of $48-million U.S. in the second quarter of this year, up from $24-million the same period last year.
Company officials say the pulp and paper markets appear to be stabilizing, noting higher product shipments were partially offset by lower selling prices and unfavourable exchange rates.
Officials also cautiously predict that a modest recovery may begin to take hold this year.
Domtar adds the pulp business continues to rebound with demand expected to remain strong and prices improving.
Consolidated sales declined to $1.3-billion from $1.6-billion the year before.
