Experimental Lakes Area Saved

The Ontario government says it has found common ground
with the federal government and other partners to keep the Experimental Lakes Area open.
The province says it will provide operating support and work
toward an agreement so the “important science” conducted in the ELA, west of Vermilion Bay can continue.
The area of 58 pristine lakes has been used since the late 1960’s for groundbreaking freshwater studies.
It became the subject of controversy when Ottawa announced last year that it was closing the area to save $2-million annually.
The Ontario government says it is working collaboratively with the federal government, the Manitoba government and others to keep the area operational this year and to ensure sustained longer-term operations.
It says the research performed in the area helps with pollution reduction strategies, understanding of climate change and how to protect our lakes and rivers in Ontario, across Canada and around the world.
Premier Kathleen Wynne calls the ELA a “jewel” that provides invaluable information on climate change and stresses it must be preserved.
