The Experimental Lakes Area east of Kenora is being told to operate more as a business than a charity. An audit conducted on the 13 million dollar research facility suggests it doesn’t charge enough for visiting scientists and the research it does conduct doesn’t benefit the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which owns the property. The audit recommends charging higher user fees, eliminating free accommodations for scientists families and focussing its research. The Experimental Lakes Area is a series of 58 lakes located between Vermillion Bay and Highway 71.
