Feds Investing In Broadband Expansion

Northern Ontario may benefit from a $10 billion dollar federal infrastructure announcement.

Minister in charge Catherine McKenna provides some of the details.

“Significantly increasing our broadband investments so all Canadians have access to affordable high-speed broadband. To transforming how we power our economy through clean energy and getting rural and remote Indigenous communities off diesel.”

Two billion is being allocated for large-scale energy efficient building retrofits.

McKenna says “It’s clear that sustainable infrastructure and a move to the clean economy is not only where the world is going, it is a huge economic and jobs opportunity.”

Provinces can now apply for the funding.

Specifics:
-$2.5 billion for clean power to support renewable generation and storage and to transmit clean electricity between provinces, territories and regions, including northern and Indigenous communities.
-$2 billion to help connect about 750,000 homes and small businesses to broadband in underserved communities.
-$2 billion for large-scale energy efficient building retrofits.
