The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is reflecting back on a busy fire season.
Information Officer Chris Marchand says a majority of the fires played out mostly out of sight, in more remote areas and in the Far North.
Marchand says the Northwest Region claimed 839 of the provincial total of 1,325 fires, easily beating the 10-year average for fires across the province at 756.
The blazes consumed 213,695 hectares of land, 77% of the total of all of Ontario. (276,356)
Marchand says local crews did get some help.
The province received 799 firefighters and 128 support staff from other provinces, territories, the United States and even Mexico.
Ontario was also able to send 407 firefighters and 101 support staff to fire ravaged British Columbia.
Marchand notes they did a good job carefully managing staff and equipment between this region and a very volatile Northeast District.
