More government funds are being allocated to help keep our schools safe.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says an extra $381 million is being spent, bringing the total provincial contribution since the start of the pandemic to $1.6 billion.
He says “We are providing $60 million for online learning including elementary and remote learning course packs. $80 million for student devices such as more laptops and tablets and much more.”
Lecce says $62 million is being spent on summer learning supports “Including core programming and upgrading courses. Special education and mental health programming. Reading and Math programs. STEM summer programming and supports for under-serviced students in our province.”
Lecce notes an extra $65 million will cover health and safety costs including the purchase of personal protection equipment and additional staffing.
A $50 million investment is being made to improve air quality and ventilation in schools.
Lecce says an additional $10 million will support the mental health of all students.
Ontario is also allowing temporary certification of eligible teacher candidates who are set to graduate this year in order to stabilize staffing levels and deal with high levels of absenteeism.
