The Ontario Provincial Police in the Northwest Region call it a step in the right direction.
As of March 18th, fines for distracted driving will go up from $155 to $280.
Sergeant Shelley Garr says drivers aren’t getting the message about the dangers of driving while using an electronic device.
Garr says they want people to be safe and she’s hoping this will help drive home the message that talking on the phone, texting or using an MP3 player while behind the wheel can be fatal.
Garr notes it’s a major problem in northwestern Ontario and it results in a good chunk of collisions on area highways.
The fines will not apply to GPS screens.
