The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is urging local residents to be extremely careful with recreational fires over the long weekend.

It will warm, humid and there’s a chance of thunderstorms and the fire hazard is rebounding after a couple of days of relief.

There are 88 active fires in the northwest, nine considered not under control.

The hazard is now high across much of the region, with pockets of moderate in the Sioux Lookout and Red Lake area and low in the Thunder Bay district.

There were two new small fires reported Thursday, one about 11-kilometres east of Borups Corner.
