Firearms Deadline Midnight Tonight

A 6 month grace period requiring Canadians to register their firearms expires today.
All firearms were supposed to be registered as of January 1st, 2003.
Doug Carlson heads up the Northwest Firearms Office for the OPP and says as many as 95% of gun owners now have a licence.
Carlson says even though the grace period ends today he believes officers will still use their discretion before laying any charges.
Criminal code penalities for not registering guns include fines of up to $2,000 and forfeiting the firearms to the Crown.
