First Nations Declare State Of Emergency

The Assembly of First Nations has declared a State of Emergency for First Nations across the country in response to COVID-19.

The AFN is now pressing for immediate increases in funding for Indigenous communities as well as full involvement with governments on planning and preparedness.

National Chief Perry Bellegarde says they must work together to ensure the unique needs of First Nations are met.

Bellegarde states federal, provincial and territorial governments have taken some action to assist First Nations but notes it’s not sufficient to meet the current needs and more action is needed immediately.

He notes any new funding must have specific consideration for northern, remote and isolated communities.

Bellegarde says he will continue to push for resources to ensure the protection, health and safety of First Nations to the greatest extent possible.
