First Nations Education Act Provides Bright Future

A top goal for Kenora MP Greg Rickford happened today.
Nishnawbe-Aski Nation and Treaty Three will have greater control over their education.
Kenora MP Greg Rickford was happy to announce The First Nations Control of First Nations Education in Southern Alberta with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The act will ensure First Nation students being educated on reserves will finish each school year and graduate with a Grade 12 that is equal to a Grade 12 at a local high school.
Rickford tells CKDR that the best pathway to a job whether it’s mining, forestry or in the energy sector, starts with a Grade 12 education.
The act also gives First Nation communities greater resources and authority.
Rickford says, “The act is a call for students to stay in school and study hard, for administrators to ensure they are getting the standards that are widely accepted in their province.”
The act is is a transition agreement that will take place over the next couple years.
