First-Time Kindergarten Numbers Up In Dryden And Sioux Lookout

The Northwest Catholic District School Board is expecting a good turnout of first-time students this fall.

Superintendent of Education Kim Anderson says numbers were initially down but they’ve increased at their schools in Sioux Lookout and Dryden.

Anderson says they are up to 17 students at Sacred Heart for year one English.

St. Joseph’s is up from 26 to 29 in the same stream.

Overall the board is anticipating more than 85 first-year kindergarten students this fall.

Anderson says 96 second-year students are also expected with another 36 in French immersion programs in Dryden and Fort Frances.

A registration week took place at the end of February.

Anderson says it was to be virtual before schools were permitted to hold face-to-face events.

“Our schools scrambled. They adhered to all guidelines. With the Health Unit approving their plans some of them were able to schedule visits. They timed their visits so that no other families were in the building at the same time they had tours.”
