Despite hot weather in the forecast for Northwestern Ontario, the
Ministry of Natural Resources isn’t concerned with fish dying off because
of heat.
A “fish kill” is when a dead fish is found floating on a lake’s
surface and is often caused by an increase in algae and dramatic changes
in temperature.
Biologist Bruce Ranta says it’s usually a problem in Southern Ontario,
but anglers here have nothing to fear because of high water and oxygen levels.
Ranta says fish kills can also occur when pollutants spill into a lake.
