The Federal Government has named ex-Supreme Court Justice Frank
Iacobucci as a Special Mediator to help reach a compensation deal with former students at Indian Residential Schools.
The appointment is part of a new framework that includes a special
role for the Assembly of First Nations.
Grand Chief Phil Fontaine says it’s an historic moment and a long time coming.
Iacobucci is to work with the AFN, former students, officials and
others, and report back by next April with a proposed settlement package.
