Forest Fire Update for Thursday, May 24

The largest forest fire in the Northwest continues to grow in the Red Lake District.

The wild fire in the northern part of the Red Lake District has now grown to over 16 hundred hectares on the Ontario side of the Manitoba border.

The blaze is burning about 70 kilometers west of the Poplar Hill First Nation and remains out of control.

Overall, just two new forest fires were reported yesterday.

One was in the Kenora District at the south end of Ester Lake.

While its listed at just 0.1 hectares in size, it is listed as not under control.

The second, Red Lake Fire Number 31, is not under control at 3.8 hectares and is located near Borel Lake.

Fire Hazards are high across most of the Northwest and extreme in portions of the Red Lake District.

A Restricted Fire Zone remains in effect.
