Forestry Rebound In Kenora

Things are on the up and up for Weyerhaeuser in Kenora.

Plant manager Bill Candline says the mill has ramped production back up to 90% of capacity, as the U.S. housing market continues to rebound.

Candline says the mill saw an increase of 18-employees over last year bringing the total up to 208.

Another 12 new hires are expected in 2016.

Candline says a big focus is attracting younger employees.

He adds they are meeting with First Nations hoping to secure a tri-lateral agreement in the management of the Whiskey Jack Forest.

Candline says they’re travelling as far away as Ignace to secure wood for the mill which is adding around $1-million in extra cost every year.
