Former Chief Pleads Guilty To Historic Sexual Offence

A long-standing court case is close to resolution.

The former Grand Chief of Treaty Three, Eli Mandamin has pleaded guilty the lesser of two sexual offences dating back to March of 1981.

A rape charge was dismissed and instead Mandamin pled guilty to sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16, but older than 14.

His lawyer Robin Parker says a sentencing hearing will likely take place in late June after a Gladue report is drafted on the case.

“He’s well known in the community for the work he’s done on behalf of the community. And he’s had an extraordinary life. And he’s brought himself up from a place that’s deep and dark. This arises from that time and it’s important that the judge sentencing him knows all about that.”

Mandamin was a first nations constable with the OPP on the Shoal Lake #39 First Nation at the time of the sexual offence.
