Trade talks between Canada, the United States and Mexico are now underway.
One trade expert with the Fraser Institute says the United States is looking for movement on our protected dairy industry.
Fred McMahon says no one is benefiting from the current system of supply management.
He notes Canadian consumers are currently paying about 60-cents more per litre of milk compared to Americans.
McMahon says other American ‘key asks’ include opening up the banking and telecommunication industries.
He points out that we may need to open up some of our main industries to competition.
McMahon says the United States wants to enter into our marketplace and we should let them.
He adds allowing American companies would force ours to become more competitive.
