Minister of Infrastructure Glen Murray says he had some good meetings with the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association this week.
Murray notes that there is a large need for bridge replacements, and it’s something the government cannot delay any further.
In regards to the twinning of Highway 17, Murray says they’re having troubles getting funding.
The traditional funding model was that the TransCanada funding was a shared provincial fund, that was shared 50/50, but Murray notes they’re lucky if they can get 10-percent funding for highways.
Along with mayors in Northwestern Ontario and Premier Kathleen Wynne, Murray says they are asking for a national transit and transportation strategy to get the federal government more involved in funding highways.
