A 67‑year‑old man named Carl, receiving end‑of‑life care at Nipissing Serenity Hospice, had one wish left on his list, to go ice fishing on Lake Nipissing, just one more time. It’s something that mattered deeply to him, and to his family.

So the hospice team got to work. With help from the Community Paramedics Program, Lake Nipissing Outfitters, and Crafts Ice Cabins, they made it happen, safely, thoughtfully.
Carl was picked up right from the hospice in a wheelchair‑accessible vehicle and brought out to the lake, where a large, cozy ice cabin was waiting, room enough for his wife and sister to sit with him, share music, and soak in the moment.

He spent close to two and a half hours on the ice, fully supported the whole time. And yes, he even caught a fish before heading home.
Hospice staff say these moments are part of their mission, helping people live fully right to the very end, And they’re quick to share the credit. Community partners who go above and beyond who say “yes,” even when it’s complex. It’s a beautiful reminder that compassion is a team effort, and that kindness travels a long way across the ice.
