Government Won’t Bail Out Greyhound

Ontario’s Government says it’s hopeful other bus companies will step in to fill the void left after Greyhound
announced plans to cut service in Northwestern Ontario.
Transportation Minister Jim Bradley says Greyhound has already abandoned some lines in this region and other companies have taken over those routes.
Bradley expects there will also be interest in this case, and notes that in the past government subsidies haven’t been necessary.
Greyhound has warned that unless it gets $15 million in
Government subsidies it will shut down operations this Fall.
Local politicians have said the cuts will devastate rural
communities and asked federal and provincial leaders work with Greyhound on a deal.
Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry Michael Gravelle called the planned cancellations “a great concern” but also expressed hope a bailout won’t be necessary.
Parcel shipments would not be impacted.
