Grassy Narrows First Nation Suing Province

The Grassy Narrows First Nation is launching another lawsuit against the provincial government over clear cut logging activity in their traditional land use area.

Robert Castrilli is their lawyer and says they they plan to use the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to force the government to stop logging activity in the Whisky Jack Forest.

The community fears that clearcut logging will release mercury into local waterways further poisoning local fish and residents.

Castrilli claims the logging plan will prolong and deepen the ongoing tragedy of mercury poisoning in the community.

He says they filed their documents before Ontario Divisional court on Friday but says it could take months before any judges finally get to hear their case.

Castrilli notes they wanted the government to conduct an environmental assessment on the impacts on such logging but notes it was turned down in 2014.
