Ontario’s Liberal Government is providing emergency funding to a number of First Nations in light of the ongoing youth suicide crisis in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.
1.6 million dollars is going towards Pikangikum First Nation to hire 20 mental health counsellors to help their community.
The province is also spending $200,000 to send 4 additional mental health counsellors for Wapekeka First Nation.
Wapakeka and Nibinamik will share a pot of funding for emergency supplies and youth supports.
The government is also creating a new Indigenous Youth and Community Wellness Secretariat that will work with communities, NAN and the federal government.
